Keyword Gap Tool
Compare your keywords with your competitors’ and find the searches they rank for and you don’t. Bring the exports you already have; the comparison runs in your browser and your files are never uploaded.
What a keyword gap shows you
A keyword gap analysis lines up the searches you appear for next to the ones your competitors appear for. The result falls into four groups:
- Missing: your competitors rank and you don’t show up at all. These are topics to write about. Keywords that both competitors share are listed first, because that usually means the topic matters in your niche.
- Weaker: you both rank, but a competitor is higher. Improving an existing page is usually faster than writing a new one, so start here.
- Stronger: you already beat every competitor in your files.
- Only you: keywords in your file that no competitor has.
How to get the files
- Your site from Google Search Console (free): Performance → Search results → set the date range → Export → Download CSV. Upload the Queries file (in the ZIP or the “Queries” sheet in Excel). The Search Console screen exports up to 1,000 queries.
- Competitors from Semrush, Ahrefs or Ubersuggest: open the competitor’s domain in “Organic Research” / “Organic keywords” and export to CSV or Excel. Free accounts usually allow a limited export, which is still enough to find the biggest gaps.
- Any other tool: any CSV or Excel file works if the first row has a keyword or query column. Position, volume, difficulty and URL columns are used when present.
Good to know
This tool doesn’t fetch rankings itself: it compares the files you give it, so the results are only as fresh and complete as your exports. Search Console shows average positions over a period, while Semrush and Ahrefs estimate rankings on a given day in one country, so treat small position differences as noise. Volumes are the estimates from your competitor tool’s file.
Next step: paste the “Missing” keywords into the Keyword Clustering Tool to group them into article topics, then check each draft with the SEO Content Checker.
How to use the Keyword Gap
- Upload your own keywords: the Queries export from Google Search Console, or a Semrush/Ahrefs export.
- Upload one or two competitors’ organic keyword exports.
- Start with “Weaker” to improve existing pages, then use “Missing” to plan new content. Download the list as CSV.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I get my competitors’ keywords?
From a keyword tool such as Semrush, Ahrefs or Ubersuggest: look up the competitor’s domain in its organic keywords report and export it. Free accounts usually allow a limited export.
Can I use Google Search Console for my own site?
Yes. Export Performance → Search results and upload the Queries file. Positions are averages, so small differences against other tools aren’t meaningful.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The comparison runs in your browser and the files never leave your device.
