Meta Tags for Shopify
Shopify gives every product, collection and page a “Search engine listing” section. Write it here with a live Google preview, then paste the values in. No app needed.
Use a full https:// address. Best size: 1200 × 630 pixels.
Where Shopify keeps your meta tags
- Products, collections, pages and blog posts: open the item in your admin, scroll to Search engine listing at the bottom and click the pencil icon. You’ll see Page title, Meta description and URL handle. Shopify shows character counters, but its limits are generous; Google still cuts at about 580 px for titles and 920 px for descriptions, which is what the meter here checks.
- Homepage: go to Online Store → Preferences for the homepage title, meta description and (in most themes) the social sharing image.
- Theme code: your theme’s
layout/theme.liquidturns those fields into real tags usingpage_titleandpage_description. Modern themes such as Dawn already do this, so you rarely need to edit code.
Writing product titles that sell
If you leave the search fields empty, Shopify uses the product name and the start of the product description, which is often a shipping note or the first line of specs. A strong product title includes the product type, a key attribute (material, colour, size) and your brand. A strong description adds the main benefit and a reason to buy now: free delivery, returns, a guarantee.
Collections deserve attention too
Collection pages often rank for broader, high-traffic searches like “linen shirts for men”. Write their titles and descriptions by hand, and add a short paragraph of unique text to the collection description so the page has more than a grid of products.
Duplicate content to watch for
Shopify shows the same product at /products/… and /collections/…/products/…. The canonical tag in your theme points both to the main product URL, so leave the canonical_url line in place if you customise theme.liquid.
How to use the Meta Tags for Shopify
- Enter the product (or collection) title, description, URL and image.
- Check the Google preview and keep both meters green.
- In Shopify, open Search engine listing on that product, click the pencil and paste the values.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I edit meta descriptions in Shopify?
Open the product, collection, page or blog post in your admin, scroll to Search engine listing and click the pencil icon. The homepage settings are under Online Store → Preferences.
Do I need an SEO app for meta tags in Shopify?
No. Shopify’s built-in fields cover titles and descriptions. Apps only save time when you have hundreds of products to update.
Why does my Shopify product show the wrong description in Google?
If the meta description is empty, Shopify uses the start of the product description, and Google may also pick other text. Fill in the Search engine listing field.
