Twitter Card Generator
Choose how your link appears when posted on X: a large image card or a compact summary card. Preview it before anyone sees it.
Large card: 2:1 ratio, e.g. 1200 × 600 (1200 × 630 also works). Summary card: square, at least 144 × 144. Under 5 MB.
Twitter cards on today’s X
Twitter is now X, but the tags still start with twitter: and work the same way. When a post contains your link, X reads these tags to build the preview card. Two card types cover almost every website:
- summary_large_image: a wide image above the title. Best for articles, products and anything visual. It takes more space in the feed and usually gets more clicks.
- summary: a small square thumbnail beside the title. Good for profiles, documentation and pages without a strong image.
Which tags are really required?
Only twitter:card is truly required. For the title, description and image, X falls back to your Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:image) when the twitter: versions are missing. So if your page already has Open Graph tags, adding just twitter:card (and twitter:site for attribution) is enough. Add the full set only when you want different text on X.
How to test your card
X retired its public Card Validator, so the simplest test is to start writing a post with your link: the preview appears in the composer before you publish. Cards are cached for about a week; if you change the image, a new query string such as ?v=2 forces a fresh fetch.
Image tips
- Keep important text in the centre: X crops images differently on phones and desktops.
- Use JPG, PNG or WebP under 5 MB. Animated GIFs show only the first frame.
- Add
twitter:image:altif the image carries information, for screen-reader users.
How to use the Twitter Card Generator
- Choose the large image or summary card type.
- Enter the title, description, page URL, image and your @handle.
- Copy the twitter: tags into your page’s <head> and test by drafting a post with the link.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Twitter tags if I already have Open Graph?
You need twitter:card to choose the card type. X uses your og:title, og:description and og:image when the matching twitter: tags are missing.
Where is the Twitter Card Validator?
X removed it. Paste your link into a new post: the composer shows the card preview before you publish.
Why is my card showing a small image?
Either twitter:card is set to summary, or the image is too small or the wrong shape for a large card. Use a 2:1 image of at least 300 × 157 pixels.
