What a meta description is for
A meta description is a short summary of the page in your HTML. It isn’t a ranking factor, but it often becomes the grey text under your link in Google, and that text decides whether someone clicks your result or the one below it.
A simple formula that works
- Match the search. Use the main keyword naturally. Google bolds words that match the query, which draws the eye.
- Say what they get. Be concrete: “a 7-day feeding schedule and photos of each stage”, not “everything you need to know”.
- Add a reason to click now. A short call to action or a benefit: free, quick, step by step, updated this year (only if true).
How long should it be?
There is no official limit, but desktop results show roughly 920 pixels, about 150–160 characters, before cutting the text with “…”. Mobile can show a little more. Put the important words in the first 120 characters so they survive any cut. The meter above measures the width with Google’s font.
Why Google rewrites descriptions
Google often writes its own snippet from your page text when it thinks another passage matches the search better. That’s normal, especially for long pages that answer many questions. A clear, specific description still gets used for your main searches, and it is the text most social apps show when the page is shared.
Mistakes to avoid
- The same description on many pages (common with templates and plugins).
- Keyword lists (“shoes, running shoes, best shoes”) that read like spam.
- Double quotes inside the text: they can break the HTML attribute. This tool escapes them for you.

Frequently asked questions
Do meta descriptions help rankings?
Not directly. Google has said they are not a ranking factor, but a good description can raise your click-through rate, which brings more visitors from the same position.
Why is Google showing different text from my description?
Google rewrites snippets when another part of the page matches the search better. Keeping the description specific and accurate makes it more likely to be used.
Can I leave the meta description empty?
You can, and Google will build a snippet from your content. Writing one is still worth it for important pages and for social sharing.
