Meta Tags for Blogger
Blogger has hidden meta tag settings, and most themes don’t include social share tags. Get the right settings, a description for each post, and theme code that works on every page.
Your default share image, used on pages without a picture. 1200 × 630 is best.
Step 1: turn on search descriptions
Blogger hides the meta description field until you enable it. Go to Settings → Meta tags, switch on Enable search description, and write a description for your homepage. Blogger allows up to 150 characters here.
Step 2: write one for every post
Once enabled, the post editor shows a Search description box in the right-hand sidebar. Paste the description from this tool for each new post, and go back to your most popular old posts and add one too. Posts without it get a snippet Google builds from your first paragraph.
Step 3: add social share tags to your theme
Many Blogger themes print no Open Graph tags, so links shared on Facebook or WhatsApp show the wrong image or none. The Theme XML output adds them using Blogger’s own data tags, so each post automatically uses its own title, description and first image. Pages without an image use your default share image.
- Go to Theme, click the arrow next to Customise, and choose Backup first.
- Then choose Edit HTML, find
<head>and paste the code on the line after it. - If your theme already has
og:lines, remove the old ones so nothing is duplicated, then Save.
Don’t paste plain HTML tags with fixed text into the theme: Blogger uses one theme for every page, so a fixed description would appear on all of your posts.
More Blogger SEO wins
- Custom permalink: in the post sidebar, choose a short custom permalink with your keyword instead of the long automatic one.
- Labels: use a few broad labels. Hundreds of tiny label pages create thin content.
- Custom robots header tags (Settings → Crawlers and indexing): leave them off unless you know exactly what each option does. A wrong setting can remove your blog from Google.
How to use the Meta Tags for Blogger
- Enter your post title, search description, post URL and a default share image.
- Follow the Blogger settings tab to enable and fill in search descriptions.
- Back up your theme, then paste the Theme XML code after <head> in Edit HTML.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the search description in Blogger?
Enable it first in Settings → Meta tags. After that, every post has a Search description box in the right sidebar of the editor.
How long can a Blogger search description be?
Blogger allows up to 150 characters for the homepage description. Google shows about 150–160 characters, so keep the key message in the first 120.
Why does my Blogger post show no image on Facebook?
Most Blogger themes lack Open Graph tags. Add the Theme XML code from this page so each post shares its own first image.
